Welcome to this week's settle up segment where we take key takeaways from
2
:Tuesday's episode of Doing Life Different.
3
:And on Tuesday, I was blessed to have my
good friend and the functional assessment
4
:practitioner, my practitioner, Marie
Simpson on She was talking about what
5
:we're all talking about are those.
6
:Those weight loss medications and I
wanted to get the skinny from Marie.
7
:I wanted to find out what other
functional assessment practitioners
8
:and natural paths and, um, folks
are saying about these medications.
9
:I wanted to find out what they do
that we can't do on our own, and
10
:if there are ways that we can.
11
:Do things that kind of act like that,
and also just to kind of touch base on
12
:is it really necessary for somebody who
maybe has five or 10 pounds to lose?
13
:And so it was a great conversation.
14
:Go back and listen.
15
:It's, it's long and detailed and full of,
of good stuff, but I just, I do wanna give
16
:you just that outlying information so.
17
:What I learned from Marie is they really
can't find anything wrong with it.
18
:I mean, you would think there are some
side effects and she talks about those.
19
:So go back and listen
if you wanna hear those.
20
:So as with any medication,
right, there can be side effects.
21
:But other than that, and the fact
that for somebody who's really obese.
22
:Is thinking about being on the
medication for the rest of their
23
:lives, you know, and kind of planning
on that might be a good option.
24
:She also works with patients who are
trying to, working to get off of it.
25
:The thing that's hard about them, and
the thing that you need to be careful
26
:of, if you're on, um, some of these, um.
27
:Medications is that when you
lose the weight, she said, I feel
28
:like you lose a lot of muscle.
29
:And so you wanna be cognizant of
your muscle, of your bone density.
30
:You know, I love osteostrong,
that osteogenic loading and I'll,
31
:I, you know, we'll talk about
that in an upcoming episode, but
32
:you wanna make sure that you're.
33
:If you are on these medications,
you're taking a lot of protein, you're
34
:doing HIIT workouts and strength
training, kinda what is good for you
35
:when you're not on the meds, right?
36
:So I think what she talked about
was how it can really bring hope.
37
:To people and, and then
they can take the action.
38
:That's hard to take.
39
:It's hard to go for a walk
if it hurts when you walk.
40
:So, you know, take it slow, go on them,
you know, if you need to go on those
41
:meds, go on 'em and, and do the important
things that you need to do to have a
42
:healthy lifestyle Along with it, she
always talks about like, um, better.
43
:And best and like better is doing
it, you know, doing the medication
44
:best is to also do all the things
like low sugar, high protein.
45
:Um, so we, we talked a lot about that.
46
:Um, I asked her about what we can do.
47
:To kind of replicate what that
medication does because apparently
48
:it kind of works with your hormones.
49
:It makes you feel full and satisfied.
50
:And the things she told me about
protein, and you know, we're hearing
51
:it, it's, she said, 30 grams per meal.
52
:I'm telling you, it's kind
of hard to do sometimes.
53
:She also talked about a way to eat,
and I'm not gonna repeat that here
54
:because I could mess that up because
I'm not a medical practitioner,
55
:but she talked about a strategy
on what type of food to eat first.
56
:Um, but I do know that protein is key.
57
:Um, we talked a lot about
joy and stress reduction.
58
:And so, um, you know, I think we tend
to forget that when we're stressed out,
59
:it makes our hormones go wonky, which
can affect how we metabolize things.
60
:It can affect, you know,
causing us to eat more.
61
:And so just as with
everything, we need more joy.
62
:And even with our eating,
it even plays a factor.
63
:Our weight loss.
64
:So go back and listen.
65
:It's such, I don't know if I'm doing
it justice because I don't have that
66
:medical background, but the basic
bottom line is she doesn't really have
67
:a lot of bad things to say about it.
68
:There are some side effects, as with
any, um, drug, she thinks that yep,
69
:if you have five pounds to lose,
you can, um, do it, but probably.
70
:Not necessary.
71
:And why would you go on a medication?
72
:Because it's not really gonna benefit
your body like it would someone who
73
:had a large amount of weight to lose.
74
:So, um, find the joy.
75
:Eat your protein, lift your weights.
76
:Have fun.
77
:Have fun.
78
:Go for walks.
79
:Play tennis, play pickleball.
80
:Play ping pong For goodness sakes, just do
things to move your body and enjoy life.
81
:And that seems to be the key to having a
healthy weight and a healthy long life.
82
:Go back and listen.
83
:It's a great one.
